Do We Remove CO2 and Then Wait and Hope? Or Directly Remove the Trapped Heat?

Posted: 5/2/2022

What we are now seeing is that the earth's surface atmospheric temperature is heating up. According to the published charts, year by year, it is getting hotter outside. We see evidence of this in less snow falling each year, glaciers melting and the average surface atmospheric temperatures going up.

Attention has been focusing on limiting the temperature rise over the upcoming decades by 1.5 deg. C by reducing the release of CO2 when fossil fuels are burnt by massively reducing the use of fossil fuels. It is said that this previous and ongoing increase in CO2 at least since the beginning of the industrial revolution (and as far back as 20,000 years) has resulted in trapped and increasing heat within the lower atmosphere. It is said that if we are successful in limiting the rise of temperature, we can avoid a climate crisis and its inherent climate change and disaster.

An enormous amount of effort has been expended in reducing the release of CO2 as well as subsequent capture and sequester of the CO2 already existing in the atmosphere. Even if these ongoing efforts are successful, there are significant differences of opinion in how long after any reduction in CO2 in the atmosphere would the release of trapped heat occur (so as to be noticed by a reduction of any more global warming). These atmospheric CO2 reduction efforts should continue.

Another method of cooling the atmospheric temperature is to directly remove the heat trapped within. With this methodology, each bit of heat removed would result in a bit of cooling. The invention discussed herein and subject of the ongoing patent application can provide a methodology for direct removal of heat. It is called Direct Heat Removal (DHR).

As described below, obtaining a patent is progressing. Once granted, use of the patented method can result in the reduction in the trapped heat within the atmosphere and the reduction of additional atmospheric heating. A reduction in the rate of temperature increase can be realized independently from other efforts to control it.

Please stay tuned!

It is Not Only One’s Carbon Footprint, It is Also One’s Heat Footprint

Posted: 12/26/2021, revised 5/2/2022

It is generally accepted that Climate Change, as affected by Global Warming, is occurring. In the years ahead, the projections indicate that the earth’s surface atmospheric temperature will increase. It is said that this rise in the earth’s atmospheric temperature will cause the climate to change greatly.

The chief culprit causing this warming is the accumulation of what are referred to as “greenhouse gases” in the atmosphere produced chiefly by the burning of fossil fuels. The increasing amount of these “greenhouse gases” is said to trap the heat within the earth’s atmosphere causing the earth’s surface temperature to rise.

Chief among these identified “greenhouse gases” is Carbon Dioxide (CO2). There exists much in the literature describing the effects of “greenhouse gases”, such as CO2, which are demonstrated to trap heat. The negative implications of CO2 are so great, that it has become common to measure relative human activity and its negative affect on Climate Change in terms of Carbon Footprint (carbon being a chemical constituent of CO2). If you have a low Carbon Footprint, that is good. If you have a high Carbon Footprint, that is bad.

But, in fact, it is also necessary to examine one’s Heat Footprint. This is the amount of heat that is released into the earth’s atmosphere during the burning of the fossil fuel, as well as the release of heat during nuclear power generation and other sources of heat. The actual heat released is a direct measurement of one’s activity relative to Global Warming, i.e., released heat is the underlying source and direct cause of Global Warming.

For sources of power derived from the sun, i.e., wind, solar and hydro-electric, these do not release CO2 during the extraction of electrical power, nor does the extraction of power from these sources release any more heat than what is coming into the earth from the sun anyway.

For fossil fuel, the release of heat occurs during its burning for power generation, direct heating, manufacturing, operation of cars, airplanes and other forms of transportation, as well as other uses. Along with the heat, the burning also releases CO2, the chief “greenhouse gas”. As the studies appear to demonstrate, if the CO2 is removed from the atmosphere, even after its release, the heat trapped in the atmosphere should be reduced. Although how long it takes for the heat to dissipate is still under discussion. Therefore, the use of the percentage of CO2 in the atmosphere as an indicator of Global Warming is, at best, an indirect measurement of one’s impact on the environment.

But, to demonstrate the complexity of this type of assessment, consider nuclear power generation. True, CO2 is not released during the production of nuclear power. However, a very great deal of heat is currently released during the fission reaction and later from a fusion reaction, if that becomes feasible. This vast quantity of energy was stored in the nuclear fuel at each element’s creation. This release of heat is an important source of the Global Warming and must be taken into consideration during the assessment one’s Heat Footprint.

One other source of extracted energy is geo-thermal. There is a very small release of CO2. However, a considerable amount of heat is extracted when brought to the surface, in the form of electricity and waste heat. This heat is ultimately dissipated into the atmosphere and contributes to the heating of the atmosphere and Global Warming. This release of heat from geo-thermal is an important source of the Global Warming and must be taken into consideration during the assessment one’s Heat Footprint.

So, efforts to remove CO2 from the atmosphere should certainly continue, but it becomes very important to consider one’s Heat Footprint when assessing one’s impact on Global Warming.

Moving forward, we must consider both the Carbon Footprint and the Heat Footprint.

We Must Find a New, Novel, Method to Accomplish Direct Heat Removal (DHR)

Posted: 1/20/2022, revised 5/2/2022

In the future, we will be monitoring one’s Heat Footprint as well as one’s Carbon Footprint for their impact on Global Warming. Although the release of CO2, a “greenhouse gas”, is keeping heat trapped in the earth’s atmosphere, its removal is calculated to result in a gradual cooling, once it is removed. But, of course, it is the enormous amount of heat released during power generation and other purposes from fossil fuels, nuclear fuels and some geo-thermal that can also contribute to atmospheric warming. Simply put, the huge release of heat can contribute to global warming.

To reduce the effects of the release of carbon in the form of CO2, an extensive amount of research into the capture and storage of CO2 is ongoing. Once captured, the aim is to store the CO2 in a permanent manner so that it will not escape back into the atmosphere. This work, crucial to the reduction of Climate Change, will continue. But that leaves enormous opportunities in the area of reducing the heat released into the atmosphere.

At the present time, in our own personal effort to combat Climate Change, we are concentrating efforts on monitoring our own Carbon Footprint. The logic behind this is that if our lifestyle results in the release of CO2 in the atmosphere, then what we are doing is relatively bad as compared to someone who is leaving less CO2 in their wake.

So, as a common example, if you travel, you can measure how much fuel (fossil fuel) is actually burned during this process. You would then divide it by the number of persons on the mode of transportation you are on. For example, if you fly on a fossil fuel powered jet carrying 175 persons, you can divide the amount of fuel which is consumed during the flight by the number of persons on the flight and then again by the distance travelled to get the fuel per mile per person. The CO2 left behind during the combustion is a measure of your carbon footprint. So, persons who travel on private aircraft, especially jet-powered aircraft, are routinely criticized because the fuel per mile per person can be very much higher than for those travelling in “coach” on a commercial airliner.

For automotive travel, however, the calculation can be more complicated. If travelling in an electrically powered car, this mode is sometimes referred to as an emission-free mode of travel. The problem is, of course, is that this would apply only if the electrical power for battery charging came from renewables such as solar, wind or hydro-electric power sources. At this time, however, most of the power utilized by electrically powered cars comes from fossil fuel powered electrical sources, each with their own higher carbon footprint. When this is compared to a modern internal combustion engine powered car, the carbon footprint may not differ that much. Hence, there is the very strong push to convert the sources of electrical power which could be used as a source for electrical powered cars to renewables.

But to complicate the issue, there is a new push on to utilize nuclear energy for the generation of electrical power. While it is true that no CO2 is produced during the production of electricity from nuclear power, there is still the enormous release of heat during the process. This would be comparable to the amount of heat released by the production of electrical power from the burning of fossil fuels.

Thus, in the case of nuclear fuels, it is perceived that this mode of power generation produces a lower Carbon Footprint. But of course, as with both sources, the huge amount of heat is still produced, i.e., the Heat Footprint is still enormous in either of these cases.

Then, in the case of Geo-thermal power generation and its associated waste heat, there is also an enormous amount of heat released to the surface.

Moving forward, with the currently utilized fossil-fuel based generation, the nuclear based generation and the Geo-thermal sources that will be utilized for electrical vehicles, there would still be a very high Heat Footprint.

Now, whether it is the heat released during air transportation, the heat released during automotive transportation or the heat released during electrical power release from geo-thermal energy, it is the heat itself that can be contributing to the warming the atmosphere of the planet. This isn’t going away any time soon. And to reduce Climate Change, we must find a way to reduce our Heat Footprint.

In any case, in addition to the effort to get rid of CO2 in the atmosphere, thereby reducing the heat trapped by the greenhouse gas, we need to investigate and discover alternatives for getting rid of the heat itself. I call it Direct Heat Removal (DHR). What we need is a new, novel, method to get rid of this heat, and thereby lower the temperature of the atmosphere.

Solving the “Global Warming” Problem needs a Technical Solution

Posted: 12/31/2021

In an effort to reduce “Climate Change”, i.e., “Global Warming”, tremendous amounts of scientific resources are being expended in the effort to reduce the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. CO2 has been shown to be a measure, albeit indirect, of the warming which is occurring. Most of the effort to reduce CO2 involves proposals involving “carbon capture and storage” and the like. Of course, this includes not only the CO2 being released at the present time from power generation utilizing Fossil Fuels, but also CO2 which has accumulated in the atmosphere for years and years. As the CO2 has continued to build up in the atmosphere, it has taken on the properties of a “Greenhouse Gas”. “Greenhouse Gases” have been shown to trap heat within the atmosphere. As more and more heat is trapped, the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere is increasing.

It is now understood that one’s Carbon Footprint is a measure of how much CO2 is released into the earth’s atmosphere as a result of one’s power consumption and lifestyle. Fossil Fuels are the chief culprit because Carbon is a constituent of the fuel burned in power generation and other processes. During the combustion, oxygen from the air combines with the carbon from the fuel to produce CO2. The Carbon in the fuel is released from its existing storage within the fossil fuels utilized for this purpose. The level of CO2 in the atmosphere has been increasing recently and has been utilized as an indirect measurement of one’s Carbon Footprint. Shifting to renewable sources of energy such as Solar, Wind and Hydro-electric, which do not release CO2 during power production, is said to result in a lower Carbon Footprint. It is also said that generating power from nuclear fuels also reduces one’s Carbon Footprint because no CO2 is released.

However, that is not the end of the story. “Climate Change”, in this case “Global Warming”, also reflects the release of heat from the fuel when power is generated. Simply put, the heat released from other than renewables is warming up the environment: the heat is causing the warming. In the case of Fossil Fuels, both CO2 and enormous quantities of heat are released. Other forms of energy, such as nuclear, and geo-thermal, release much less CO2, but unfortunately still release an enormous amount of heat. In the case of geo-thermal the heat is simply transferred up to the surface of the earth.

Here is how it breaks down: power derived from the sun, such as Solar, Wind and Hydro-electric, do not release CO2 during the power extraction. The heat from these sources would have arrived from the sun anyway. Thus, it is the enormous amount of heat being released from fossil fuels, nuclear and geo-thermal that is causing the warming. Simply put, the released heat is causing the warming.

As noted above, “carbon capture and storage” is a proposed technical solution to the accumulated CO2 problem. But, of course, while solutions do exist, most lack an effective throughput for meaningful CO2 reductions. Also, unless the power to operate such machines comes entirely from renewables, the machines themselves and the power utilized by them end up contributing to the CO2 problem.

Other non-technical solutions have been proposed, such as the “National Contributions to the $100 Billion Climate Finance Goal”. But transfers of moneys from developed nations to developing nations is not what is required, especially if the definition of developing nations includes those very nations causing much of the CO2 emissions and release of heat.

So, we must find a way to reduce the heat released as a result of power production as well as continue efforts to capture and store the CO2 already released. What we need is another technical solution to the problem which addresses the heat. Simply put, we need to put into place policies which encourage less production of heat. In addition to the encouragement of conservation which reduces power consumption, we need an entirely new invention which will reduce the direct cause of the Global Warming itself and that is the direct removal of heat from the atmosphere.

Moving Towards Implementation: Climate Change Control Device to Reduce Heat Footprint

Posted: 1/3/2022

What would entice someone to install a newly invented device which would get rid of heat from the atmosphere? You’ve said that you want to save the planet from harmful Climate Change. Now is the time to implement a plan to do something about our Heat Footprint directly. From your own personal Heat Footprint to the enormous Heat Footprint of the organization you are part of, you can make a difference. Each country can participate.

You have been an advocate of reducing Global Warming through the control of the release of CO2, i.e., reducing your Carbon Footprint. At minimum, you have taken steps to reduce your power usage, which include items associated with conservation. This could have included the introduction and use of ever so much more energy efficient lighting, more insulation, more efficient heating and air conditioning equipment and unplugging your device chargers while inactive. As amazing as it might be, use of very efficient window A/C units has resulted in significant power usage reductions. Believe me, you do not need that central air to be running all the time. Yes, turning off the office lights at night may lessen the visibility of your office building, but it would help with energy conservation. These efforts should continue.

But now, faced with the Climate Emergency associated with Global Warming, what are you prepared to do to slow the actual warming? You surely want to do something. Remember, we just want to marginally reduce the heat which is accumulating and has accumulated in the atmosphere over the years. Each person, each corporation, each energy consumer and each country has the responsibility to remove heat from the atmosphere, i.e., reduce their Heat Footprint.

And soon, just over the horizon, you have been told of the availability of a device which will slow the Global Warming over time. Not only to reduce the increase in surface temperatures but eventually to enable the halt of the rise in the surface temperatures. You have been told that each device is quite affordable, easy to install and does not require power from the grid.

Would you be willing to purchase such a device directly? Would your company? Would your country participate in a program which would result in the reduction of the future expected increases in atmospheric temperature? What incentives would be required to participate?

Let’s say that the manufacturer of these devices is a participant in the program and their products are certified. But as an incentive, they are giving away a sticker indicating that you are participating in Heat Footprint reduction. You, at the personal level, would be participating and should be able to show that you are. As a company, you would be authorized to display an icon on your webpages and on your products. This, actually, is an incentive to move forward. And, of course, if your country is a participant, they would be able to participate in international conferences, planning sessions and agreements for the purpose of Heat Footprint reductions.

Each company and country could formulate their own type of rebate, tax break or subsidy to encourage participation. Let’s move ahead with implementation!

Twitter: More Thoughts

Posted: 2/28/2022

As you may be aware, I have recently started the interaction on Twitter:

Direct Heat Removal (@DirectHeatRemvl)

It may be hard to believe, but prior to this effort, I have had no presence on Social Media. Email has been plenty, thank you very much.

Establishing a presence on Twitter has been an education. I started dutifully sending out Tweets. But then, my inner programmer went to work. With the help of "Stack Overflow", I developed a PowerShell script to send Tweets automatically. I soon learned from Twitter that that was not a good idea.

But I would like to thank those of you who have engaged and sent comments and, yes, Tweets. I will say that all responses have been very thoughtful. Please let me hear from you.

My Invention and Patent Application: Progress

Posted: 6/23/2022

I am very pleased with how my application for patent had been progressing at the Patent Office. At the end of January 2022, it was assigned an Examiner. As of the end of February 2022, it had been examined. Objections were "overcome". As of the end of April 2022, the "claims" were accepted. At the beginning of May, all fees paid. By May 25, a document format correction was accepted. It was published in late June. I think it looks very good. I think it is a "solution".

But, of course, I really could not reveal the nature of the invention until the patent process was completed. I appreciate that you understood this. Please look at the write-up below concerning GoFundMe. You will see what is worrying me. If you have never set up a crowdfunding effort, please go to my page to see example. At this stage I am primarily interested in your comments. GoFundMe provides a very workable system for setting things up.

Thank you for visiting my GoFundMe page.

I believe we can make a significant impact on Global Warming

New Concept:  Global Warming de-coupled from Atmospheric CO2.  We will be able to "turn down" Global Warming without regard for CO2.

Understand the difference between Carbon Footprint and Heat Footprint - http://climateChangeControl.com

Note:  My invention described below is NOT CO2 capture or Solar Radiation Management.

My New Invention:

I have invented a device which I contend alleviates the negative effects of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.   It is implemented in a manner which does not negatively affect Climate Change.  It does not use excessive power.  I based my invention on principles learned while becoming a Mechanical Engineer. Those with STEM training will quickly understand its operational principles.

I have initiated the patent process, i.e., a patent application has been submitted and is in process. As you may be aware, this process can take a while to complete. It is for this reason that I am requesting your funding. Eventually, my invention will be confirmed when a patent is granted and its configuration revealed.

A Technical Approach:

Like so much else, a solution to a worldwide problem requires a technical solution. My invention is a technological solution to the problem of Global Warming.  Once implemented it will immediately start reducing the negative affects of Global Warming.

I Would Like to Benefit from this Idea:

It is my belief that the world can benefit from the implementation of my invention. I too, would like to benefit from the idea. That is the reason for setting up this crowdfunding page. I am requesting funding for expenses associated with the implementation of the invention.

Protecting my Intellectual Property:

Unfortunately, I anticipate that I will need legal assistance protecting my Intellectual Property moving forward. This will certainly involve establishing a new company to deal with the business of device implementation. Then, at the same time, I believe that I will need to aggressively protect the Intellectual Property contained in the invention from theft. Once the device is revealed, because of the great benefit that can be realized, I anticipate that there will be a rush to steal the design. Since Climate Change is a worldwide area of concern, this assault will likely come from many directions.

The Reality of Patent Protection:

Basically, it comes down to this: If you are the victim of Intellectual Property theft, even if you have patent protection, your only recourse is to go after the thieves in a serious way. From a legal perspective, this can be very expensive.

The Problem with CO2:

There are many inventions out there which are advertised as providing a method to control Climate Change chiefly through the control and elimination of CO2 in the atmosphere.

The driving factor of my invention is to provide a solution to what is referred to as Global Warming. The generally accepted theory is that because of the accumulation of what are referred to as “greenhouse gases” produced chiefly by the burning of fossil fuels, heat within the earth’s atmosphere is trapped and is causing the earth’s temperature to rise. Chief among these identified “greenhouse gases” is CO2. There exists much in the literature describing the effects of “greenhouse gases”, such as CO2, which are demonstrated to trap heat.

In 2021, a Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Sykuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi for their work in physics “for groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex systems”, the basis of Climate Change research involving a “25-mile-high column of air”. As noted above, because there is so much CO2 trapped, there is great concern for the earth’s rising temperature.

Carbon Release Reduction:

The most obvious method of reducing the production of CO2 is just that: Reduce the CO2 produced during power generation:

• Reduce the amount of power produced through the burning of fossil fuels
• Reduce the amount of power consumed through conservation
• Use nuclear power instead, which does not produce CO2
• Use more renewables, which don’t produce CO2
• Reduce the atmospheric warming from the heating from geo-thermal
• Temporarily convert coal and oil-fired power plants to natural gas

There is no reason these efforts cannot continue even while implementing my invention.

Carbon Capture/Sequestration:

One major area of activity designed to remove the CO2 from the atmosphere once it has been released involves the direct capture of CO2 with subsequent and permanent storage in a manner which prevents it from escaping back into the environment. Many of the proposals in this area use significant amounts of power, in some cases negatively affecting Climate Change themselves.

My invention, a technological solution , is needed.

Why do I need to protect myself?

As an inventor, I have read the sad stories of many inventors who had their inventions stolen from them:

• Read up on the unfortunate story of Philo Taylor Farnsworth II, a pioneer in the development of modern television. His inventions were under continual assault.
• Read up on the unfortunate story of Nikola Tesla, arguably the most gifted inventor ever. What was he thinking when he made less than favorable deals for his inventions. He died a pauper.
• Read up on Robert William Kearns, who invented the modern intermittent windshield wipers. His fight for rewards from his invention lasted years.

So, I need your help:

I appreciate that you have shown interest in my invention. I hope that I have convinced you that I am serious about this. In any case, I am glad that you took the time to let me tell you about my invention.  Please provide comments which you may have.  Please take a moment to Share it with others.
