My Invention Can Now Be Revealed: It's Patented!

Late last year, I submitted an application for patent. A patent has been issued (published) for my invention and it is time to reveal it. Thank you for your continued interest while I pursued this important goal.

Understanding the problem

It is claimed by many that the elevated concentration of Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ) and other Greenhouse Gases in the atmosphere has trapped heat which cannot escape. All this trapped heat has caused the unwanted increase in temperature of earth's lower atmosphere, i.e., Global Warming. As explained elsewhere, it is important to understand the difference between Carbon Footprint and Heat Footprint. The Heat Footprint is a measure of the amount of heat released during the burning of fossil fuels, as well as nuclear and other forms of energy production.

There are basically two approaches to alleviating this Global Warming problem: The indirect method and the direct method.

The Indirect Method - NOT part of this invention

The people of earth are currently trying to reduce the Global Warming by reducing the atmospheric CO2 concentration, which if it could be accomplished, is said to eventually allow the trapped heat to escape, thus lowering the temperature of earth's lower atmosphere. But as we continue burning fossil fuels, vast amounts of heat are released from the fuel itself, where it has been chemically locked up forever.

Unfortunately, I have yet to read that efforts to remove CO2 have any hope of overtaking its production by the coal-fired power plants utilized and being built in China, India and the rest of the world. These efforts, no matter how well intentioned, are thwarted.

Keep in mind that even if we were successful in totally reducing the CO2 added at the present time, there is still the CO2 which has accumulated over the last 20,000 years and, more importantly, since the industrial revolution. To handle this, there are many people/companies/groups attempting to physically capture CO2 from the atmosphere and sequester it in a manner that would prevent it from escaping later. Unfortunately, these efforts have not been successful so far, some resulting in a net increase in CO2.

At what level must the CO2 in the atmosphere be reduced to allow the trapped heat to escape? There are differing opinions on this which need to be considered. Some say it will happen quickly, i.e., a few years while some say it will require thousands of years.

Many consider that even though these efforts have been largely ineffective, they, and research about them, should continue.

The Direct Method - Part of this invention

The other approach is to simply remove the trapped heat from the lower atmosphere, thus lowering its temperature. This would result in a reduction in the Global Warming. Bit-by-bit, the global temperature rise would slow. That is what my invention is intended to do.

A decision may be required in order to avoid a climate catastrophe

Although both of the above approaches could work to reduce Global Warming, the urgency to reduce the temperature of the earth's lower atmosphere may require that we increasingly devote more effort to Direct Heat Removal (DHR).

What is Direct Heat Removal (DHR)?

DHR is simply that: Direct Removal of Heat. The problem, up until now, has been where to put this removed heat. In order for the earth's atmospheric temperature to be reduced, the objective is that the heat be removed from the earth's atmosphere.

Since the beginning of time and continuing even now, this naturally occurring process of heat removal has been facilitated via Radiant Transfer of heat from earth to outer space, primarily at nighttime. But with all that CO2 and other Greenhouse Gases trapping the heat, the Radiant Transfer at its current level cannot handle the required load. There needs to be an innovative methodology to enhance the Radiant Transfer outward. For whatever reason, this has not been accomplished. It is suspected that it was just assumed that the maximum natural Radiant Transfer of heat from the earth to outer space was already achieved and that the limiting effect of CO2 (and the other Greenhouse Gases) in the atmosphere had been reached and could not be overcome.

For whatever reason, the methodology of enhancing the Radiant Transfer of heat from earth to outer space had not been considered feasible. A methodology to enhance the Radiant Transfer is embodied in my recent invention and patent.

Let's put this in perspective

Referring to my invention in the figure, each assembly consists of Solar Collection panels, as well as rechargeable batteries, a controller Device and a Radiant Energy Emitter Enclosure. You will notice that each assembly is self-contained, self-powered and requires no power distribution connection to a grid. In addition, operation is CO2 emission-free.

During the daylight hours, power is collected and stored in the rechargeable batteries.

The Radiant Energy Emitter Enclosure houses the Radiant Energy Emitter Plate and heating coils which, in operation, are powered by the collected and stored power in the rechargeable batteries. In order to limit heat being lost to the ambient surroundings by conduction, the Emitter Enclosure is surrounded by insulation. In order to limit heat being lost to the ambient surroundings by convection, a transparent insulating layer is provided on the front surface of the enclosure as well. (Removal of air also improves the insulation capabilities.)

During the nighttime hours, within the Radiant Energy Emitter Enclosure, using the attached heating coils, the Radiant Energy Emitter Plate is kept at an elevated temperature as long as collected power is available. As noted above, the Radiant Energy Emitter Plate is insulated from the ambient surroundings, thus facilitating as much Radiant Transfer of Heat as possible from the earth to outer space.

The amount of Radiant Heat transferred is proportional to the difference between the temperature of the surface of the Emitter Plate and outer space, assumed to be near absolute zero. Thus, keeping the Emitter Plate as hot as possible (optimized for radiant transfer) for as long as possible will result in the most Radiant Heat transferred. Attention must be given to the wavelength of the energy transferred so the maximum amount of heat is actually transferred.

In effect, the energy collected and stored during the daylight hours is transferred to outer space as Radiant Heat during the nighttime hours.

In the absence of the invention, the naturally occurring Radiant Energy would be transferred quickly from the exposed ground surfaces of the earth up into space. The ground would quickly cool and the resultant energy transferred would cease. This natural cycle is responsible for the nighttime cooling which takes place, such as in a desert area.

Moving Forward

At the present time, millions and millions of Solar Collection panels, as well as rechargeable batteries and distribution networks are deployed throughout the world to supply electrical power. This is considered a feasible approach even though the length and cost of the distribution lines required limit most large-scale projects to areas adjacent to the actual need. This CO2 emissions-free energy source is currently utilized to provide power for the grid in order to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels.

Each Assembly of the invention removes an additional amount of heat from the earth to outer space, over and above that amount of heat currently removed as part of natural radiant transfer. Therefore, after each Assembly is installed, additional heat begins to transfer nightly. As more and more Assemblies are installed, more and more additional radiant heat is transferred. Note that this operation is CO2 emissions-free.

Practical Implementation

Each Assembly is low cost and easily constructed and is self-powered and need not be connected to the grid. Because of this, the Assemblies can be placed in the most remote areas which are most favorable for solar power collection and enhanced radiant heat transfer. The Assemblies can operate in an unattended mode until a defect is detected, where, if equipped with communications hardware, an alert would be sent out so repairs or other problems can be resolved. In addition, if found to be desirable, the automated positioning of both the Solar Collection panels as well as the Radiant Energy Enclosures can be controlled.

As with any new invention, ongoing testing and optimization continues.

Where can it be utilized?

The Assemblies can be set up anywhere, but of course, they are best utilized in areas where the units have clear skies during the daylight hours for the most efficient operation of the Solar Collection panels as well as have clear skies during the nighttime hours for the most efficient operation of the Radiant Heat Emitter Plates.
